The Schillerhaus in the Ludwigshafen district of Oggersheim was the Gasthof Zum Viehhof in Schiller's time , located in the walls of the city on the road to Speyer . The landlord Josef Heinrich Schick ran the inn. Friedrich Schiller stayed there as “Dr. Schmidt ”camouflaged together with his friend, the musician Andreas Streicher , from October 13th to November 30th 1782. Schiller was on the run. Unauthorized traveling from the Duchy of Württemberg to Mannheim in the Electorate of Palatinate-Bavaria , he had attended the premiere of the robbers , but received two weeks arrest and after further arguments with his sovereign, he was also banned from writing. In Oggersheim, in addition to the requested revision of Fiesko , Schiller began to write a new piece, Luise Millerin , later: Kabale und Liebe . Schiller and his friend Streicher left Oggersheim. The friends parted ways, Schiller found a new place to stay in Bauerbach / Thuringia with Henriette von Wolhaben. On a short return to Oggersheim in 1783, Schiller was able to settle the debts for her accommodation in the Gasthof Zum Viehhof .

History of the building

Inn and memorial of Schiller

The “Zum Viehof” inn was built around 1750. The landlord Josef Heinrich Schick from Dürkheim bought it in 1764, in the same year he married Johanna Elisabeth Behret from Speyer. They had twelve children together, their first child, daughter Johanna Elisabeth, was born in 1765, who married a son of Oggersheim councilor Johann Georg Sachs in 1788. As early as 1800 the "Viehhof" was no longer operated as an inn, the house was sold to the Götz family after Schicks' death. The memorial plaque that can be seen today at the Schillerhaus dates from 1856. The former Bavarian King Ludwig I had it installed there. In 1859, on Schiller's 100th birthday, a major memorial service took place here, and Speyerer Strasse was one of the first streets in Oggersheim to be renamed Schillerstrasse with a conscious dedication .

Residential and commercial building

At the end of 1800 the house on the ground floor was used as a shop and the upper floor as an apartment for the merchant and mayor Philipp Götz. The building was partially destroyed in the Second World War . In 1956 the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein bought it and renovated the property while preserving the remaining old substance.

Schiller memorial

Since 1959 the house has been a "Schiller Memorial". It is run by the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein and the local history working group, on the upper floor as a museum and as an event room for readings, lectures and temporary exhibitions. The district library is located in the basement.
