Schinia cognata is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

The moths reach a wingspan of 15 to 22 millimeters. The basic color of the fore wings is reddish brown. In the middle field there are fused yellow-white spots. The apex is pointed. Ring and kidney blemishes are dark, but hardly stand out from the ground. The wavy line is usually pink or light brown. The hind wings are black and streaked with a wide, pure white transverse band that extends to the inner edge. The females have a long abdomen with a protruding laying tube . The segment incisions on the abdomen are yellowish.
Caterpillar, pupa
Adult caterpillars are brown-gray in color, four yellowish lines on the back, wide white side stripes and black stigmas .
The brown-yellow doll is slender and has long thorns on the cremaster .
Similar species
Schinia cardui differs mainly in the narrower, creamy white transverse band on the hind wings, which does not reach the inner edge.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
Schinia cognata occurs sparsely in southeastern Europe in warmer areas. Isolated populations also live in the southwestern Alps . To the east the distribution area extends to Turkey and the southern Urals . The species mainly inhabits steppes and warm, dry slopes.
Way of life
The moths are mostly diurnal. Their main flight time includes the months of June and July. The caterpillars, which live in August and September, feed on sunflower species (Asteraceae), especially large cartilage lettuce ( Chondrilla juncea ).
