Alonso Zamora Vicente

Alonso Zamora Vicente (born February 1, 1916 in Madrid ; † March 14, 2006 ibid) was a Spanish writer, Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

Zamora Vicente studied in Madrid with Tomás Navarro Tomás , Ramón Menéndez Pidal and Américo Castro . He received his doctorate in Romance Philology in 1942 with the work El Habla de Mérida y sus cercanías (Madrid 1943). Then he taught from 1943 to 1946 at the University of Santiago de Compostela , from 1946 to 1948 at the University of Salamanca . From 1948 to 1952 he was a professor at the University of Buenos Aires , from 1953 to 1961 at the Colegio de México , from 1961 to 1968 at the University of Puerto Rico , and finally from 1968 to 1985 at the Complutense University of Madrid .

In 1966, Zamora Vicente was elected to the Real Academia Española and was its permanent secretary from 1971 to 1989. Zamora Vicente received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Salamanca (1989), Extremadura in Cáceres (1990), Coimbra (1992), Santiago de Compostela (1994) and Alicante (2002).

In 1980, Zamora Vicente received the National Prize for his narrative work. Zamora Vicente was awarded the Order of Alfonso X the Wise (Grand Cross, 2000). He bequeathed his extensive library to the Fundación Biblioteca Zamora Vicente in Cáceres .

Alonso Zamora Vicente was married to the Romanist María Josefa Canellada . He was friends with Camilo José Cela and Dámaso Alonso .
