Schiuli Sharpava
Shiuli Schartava ( Georgian ჟიული შარტავა ; Russian Жиули Калистратович Шартава ; born March 7, 1944 in Sukhumi , Soviet Union ; † September 27, 1993 ibid) was a Georgian politician.
life and career
Schiuli Schartava was born in Sukhumi, Abkhazia, in 1944, which at that time still belonged to the Soviet Union . He originally studied engineering and became involved in the politics of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia belonging to Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union . However, large parts of the Abkhazians strove for independence. In 1992 Shartava was elected to the Georgian parliament . In July 1993 he also became Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. However, the Abkhaz independence fighters increasingly gained the upper hand in the region.
Shartava was murdered by Abkhaz separatists in the Sukhumi massacre on September 27, 1993 . His body was eventually handed over to Georgia and buried in Senaki .
