Schizothorax is a genus of carp fish native to Central and South Asia. Its scientific name is synonymous with "split breast" from the Greek schízeïn (σχίζειν) "split" + thórax (θώραξ) "breastplate" (see also thorax ).

distribution

Fish of the genus Schizothorax are common in rivers and lakes of Central Asia, Central Asia and Kazakhstan. The core area is the high mountains of the Himalayas . They can be found in Kazakhstan , Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan , Afghanistan , Tajikistan , Kyrgyzstan , Pakistan , India , Myanmar , Nepal , Bhutan , Mongolia and the People's Republic of China . In Nepal, species of the genus Schizothorax occur at altitudes of 780 meters to 3,300 meters above sea level.

features

Schizothorax eurystomus

The fish are characterized by a round body and small scales. In terms of their shape, they are more similar to salmon and trout than other carp fish. In the area of the anal fin there are a number of larger scales. The pharynx are in three rows. The fish have two pairs of barbels . Depending on the species, they can be between 16 and 70 centimeters long, and large species can weigh up to 12 kilograms. The underside of the abdomen is usually blackish in color.

Way of life

The spawning season of the animals takes place in spring, when they lay their sticky eggs at the bottom of the rivers. Schizothorax pseudaksaiensis and Schizothorax esocinus are predatory fish, while most species such as z. B. the common marinka ( S. intermedius ) feeds on small animals such as invertebrates . Other species like the Balkhasch Marinka ( S. argentatus ) are herbivorous.

Use

The marinkas, especially in Lake Balkhash and Issyk-Kul, are caught as food fish.

genetics

In the highlands of Tibet , molecular markers were used to prove that there was a split in the distribution of schizothorax species following tectonic events in the Miocene .

species

A total of 62 species in the genus are Schizothorax found
