The Battle of Lomas Valentinas (also known as the Battle of Itá Ivaté) took place in the Central Departamento , Paraguay , from December 21-27 , 1868. The Paraquay army was led into battle by then President Francisco Solano López . This was badly beaten in battle. However, López was able to flee.

The Duke of Caxias was ready on the morning of December 21st to march against the positions of the Paraguayan army. An infantry unit under General Jose Luis Mena Barreto attacked the western defenses at Ita Ybate, another infantry unit under General Jacinto Machado de Bittencourt attacked the northern defenses at Loma Acosta, where the Cumbarity hill was located. The cavalry under General Andrade Neves provided support. The hill could be taken until sunset.
The next day, troops from Argentina and Uruguay were able to reach the city of Lomas Auxilio. The Duke of Caxias then reorganized his army in order to finally demand the surrender of López on Christmas Day 1868. However, this refused. The Triple Alliance then attacked the Paraguayan positions again. The defense of Paraguay finally collapsed completely on December 27th.
After the battle
López managed to escape, accompanied by Generals Francisco Isidoro Resquin and Bernardino Caballero . The Acavera cavalry escorted them and the war went on for just over a year.
