Bernardino Caballero
Bernardino Caballero Melgarejo (born May 20, 1839 in Ybycuí , † May 26, 1912 in Asunción ) was a Paraguayan general and politician. He was President of Paraguay from September 4, 1880 to November 25, 1886.
Life
Bernardino Caballero, who had no in-depth schooling, joined the Paraguayan army at a young age , and took part in decisive battles in the Triple Alliance War . Due to his military successes, Caballero was promoted to division general in August 1869.
After the war ended with the Paraguayan defeat in 1870, Paraguay experienced a phase of internal political instability and frequent changes of government. In 1874 Caballero was appointed Minister of the Interior by the Jovellanos government, and in the following years held various state offices - as Minister of War, Interior, Justice and Education.
In 1880 Caballero became provisional president; the formal election then took place for the period from 1882 to 1886. The relatively long duration of his office for this time enabled a number of reforms that were important for war-torn Paraguay, such as a central register of persons and public credit institutions.
During the 1880s, Caballero encouraged the immigration of German colonists who settled in the San Bernardino area , a town named after him.
In 1887 Caballero founded the Colorado Party , which was the government in Paraguay from 1947 to 2008 without interruption.
