San Bernardino is a small town and district in the Paraguayan department of Cordillera , around 50 kilometers from Asunción .

history

The city was founded by Jakob Schaerer as a German colony on August 24, 1881 and has 10,176 inhabitants (city administration estimate 2007). Originally the city was called Nueva Baviera (New Bavaria), but was named after the First World War in honor of the general and president of Paraguay, Bernardino Caballero, after his patron Saint Bernard . The flag of the city with its horizontal bars in black, red and yellow practically corresponds to the flag of Germany .

description

Due to its location on the eastern shore of Lake Ypacaraí , San Bernardino is an important holiday destination for the local population. Many wealthy Paraguayans own a holiday home in San Bernardino, which is usually only used in the summer months from December to February. The architecture of the town center is characterized by partly run-down buildings from the founding phase and holiday homes from the 20th century, mixed with individual hotel complexes and restaurants. On the main access road, Ruta General Morínigo , there is a large number of discos, simple restaurants and club complexes , which are mostly only open seasonally. On summer weekends, up to 20,000 guests flock to San Bernardino, which is also known as the Capital del Verano (capital of summer).

Personalities
