Eusebio Ayala is a town and district in the Cordillera department in Paraguay with about 23,600 inhabitants, 72 km from Asunción on Ruta 2 . It describes itself as the capital of the Chipa .

history

The city was founded as Barrero Grande on August 16, 1770 by Governor Carlos Morphy - an Irish colonel who worked for Spain . It was renamed on April 10, 1940 in honor of President Eusebio Ayala , who was born in this city .

On August 16, 1869, the Battle of Acosta Ñu in the Triple Alliance War took place at the gates of the city , one of the darkest historical events in Paraguay, in which 3,000 children disguised as soldiers faced the 20,000 troops of the Triple Alliance and were killed. To mark the centenary, a monument to them was erected on a hill on the battlefield, the Pantheon of Heroes .

economy

Most of the jobs in Eusebio Ayala are generated by Chipa production. There are around 100 smaller production facilities, most of them home improvement, and 13 large factories that produce this specialty. Many producers sell the Chipas in a van that they take to other cities such as Asunción, Ciudad del Este and even as far as Pedro Juan Caballero . Agriculture consists of small businesses and is mainly used for self-sufficiency.

Culture

Since 2010, the Chipa Barrero Festival has been celebrated every year in August in the city called the Chipa capital . In addition, the Chipa Rapé (Chipa Tour) has been held every year on Maundy Thursday since 2015 , during which tourists visit seven Chiperías in the city, each of which shows a handicraft and an exhibition. At the end of the tour, the participants can make their own chipas under the guidance of an experienced chef and taste them after baking.

education

In the city there is a branch of the Universidad San Carlos from Asunción, with a faculty for agriculture, agronomy and animal husbandry, as well as a teacher training institute, the Instituto de Formación Docente de Eusebio Ayala .
