Tobatí is a city in Paraguay in the district of the same name in the Cordillera department with about 20,000 inhabitants.

location

It is located 10 km from Caacupé , the next larger town. From Tobatí it takes an hour to drive to the capital Asunción . It is about 45 km to the border with Argentina in the southwest and about 20 km to the north to state road number 3.

history

Local government

Tobati was founded in June 1539 by Domingo Martínez de Irala . There are several definitions for the origin of the place name. One says that it comes from the Guaraní language tovatĩ = mud chalk , china clay, kaolin . A little outside of the village is a rocky hill called Cerro Tobatí .

economy

There are several production facilities for building materials in Tobatí, the majority of which supply roof tiles and bricks that are exported to neighboring Argentina and Brazil. In addition to modernized factories with electrical machines and ovens, there are also traditional methods of brick production .

Worth seeing

Tobatí is known for its pottery and wood carving arts. The artesenal villa shows works by the famous wood sculptor Zenon Páez . There is also the cerro , a long walkable chain of rocks about a kilometer outside the center of Tobati.
