On August 12, 1869, Piribebuy, which at that time was little more than a larger village, was taken by around 20,000 Allied soldiers after a five-hour battle. A little more than 50 soldiers were killed on the part of the attackers, and around 15 times as many on the part of the defenders, who numbered a little more than 1,600 men and fanatically defended themselves to the point of self-sacrifice.
