The Battle of Scapezzano was a brief skirmish during the Austro-Neapolitan War and took place on May 1, 1815 between an Austrian corps under General Adam Albert von Neipperg and a Neapolitan division under General Michele Carrascosa .

In May 1815, Joachim Murat, King of the Napoleonic satellite state, Kingdom of Naples, had already been forced on the defensive by the Austrians and had been pushed back to his headquarters in Ancona . However, through the Apennine Mountains , the two Austrian corps under General Neipperg and General Bianchi were forced to separate. Neipperg's corps with 15,300 men followed the retreating Neapolitan army on a direct route along the Adriatic coast, while Bianchi's corps with around 12,000 men marched inland towards Foligno to cut off the retreat to Naples . Murat, who had gathered a total of 30,000 men in Ancona, now hoped to be able to beat the two corps separately.

Murat decided to send the main force against the Bianchi corps and chose the area around Tolentino as the battle site . On the Adriatic coast he left a division under Carascosa to hold up the Neipperg corps until the Bianchi corps had been defeated. After numerous maneuvers and a few skirmishes on May 1, 1815, the Carascosa division ran the risk of being surrounded by Corps Neipperg, and thereupon withdrew to Ancona in an orderly manner. This allowed General Neipperg to threaten the main Neapolitan force that was currently involved in the Battle of Tolentino and so ultimately led to the decisive Austrian victory and the Treaty of Casalanza .
