The Battle of Raydaniyya ( Arabic معركة الريدانية; Turkish Ridaniye Muharebesi ) near Cairo took place on 22./23. January 1517 between the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Selim I, the Gestrengen and the Mamluken under the Sultan Tuman Bay .
The Ottoman Grand Vizier Hadım Sinan Pasha was killed in the battle. After the battle of Marj Dabiq and the occupation of Syria in January 1517, the Ottomans advanced into Egypt and defeated the Mamluks on January 23 at Raydaniyya near Cairo. The city was then conquered by the Ottomans in fierce street fighting . After another defeat at Giza became Tuman Bay in Ottoman captivity and was on April 14, 1517 executed . This meant the end of the Mamluk Empire, even if the Mamluk influence in Egypt lasted until the beginning of the 19th century.
