The Berca Mud Volcanoes (Romanian: Vulcanii noroioși ) are a geological and botanical reserve in the Romanian municipality of Berca in Buzau County . In 1924 the area with a size of 30 km² was declared a nature reserve.
description
The main attraction of the reserve are mud volcanoes that are a few meters high. It's cold volcanism . The volcanoes are created by gases that rise from a depth of around 3,000 m through clay and water-containing layers. The mud dries on the surface of the earth and forms structures that resemble a volcano .
Since the mud is salty and sulphurous, the result is an environment hostile to vegetation, in which, however, some rare salt-resistant plant species have settled.
