Marcusenius is a genus of African freshwater fish from the Nilhechte family(Mormyridae). It occurs in all regions of sub-Saharan tropical Africa, as well as in the Nile .

features

Marcusenius species are 9.5 to 45 cm long and have a short to moderately elongated, laterally flattened body of the typical Nile pike shape. The snout is short and blunt, the mouth terminal. A fleshy thickening of the lower jaw serves as a sensory organ to detect food. The few teeth are conical or two-pointed. The rear body profile in front of the long tail fin stalk is triangular and tapers from the greatest body height at the base of the dorsal and anal fin to the end. The anal fin is longer than the dorsal fin, the caudal fin is forked.

The fish are inconspicuous, mostly monochrome grayish or brownish in color. Like all Nilhechte, Marcusenius species are capable of electrical communication and electrical orientation.

species

The genus includes about 40 species:

Marcusenius furcidens
Marcusenius ussheri
