The slender diaper snail ( Vertigo heldi ) is a species of snail from the family of the diaper snail (Vertiginidae) in the suborder of the land snail (Stylommatophora).

features

The right-hand wound, cylindrical housing of the slim diaper snail is 2.5 to 2.7 mm high and 1.2 mm wide (according to Clessin 4.0 to 4.5 mm high, 1 mm wide). It has 5.5 to 6 arched turns, which are separated from each other by a deep seam. The last three turns hardly increase in diameter. The end turn forms an edge or "shoulder" under the seam. The case is brown and translucent with a glossy finish; this is very finely striped. The mouth edge is hardly thickened and therefore appears relatively sharp. Only a weak neck bulge is formed on the upper edge. The teeth, a palatal and a parietal, are only weakly developed, and in some cases are even absent. The inside of the callus is only weakly pronounced.

Similar species

The species is difficult to distinguish from some extreme forms of the very variable common diaper snail ( Vertigo pygmaea ). As a rule, however, the shell of the slender diaper snail is larger, somewhat more cylindrical and therefore narrower than the shell of the common diaper snail. Fresh housings are more translucent and the surface is more shiny.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the species is restricted to southern Germany, northern Switzerland and Austria. In Switzerland it occurs at 300 to 400 m above sea level. It is very rare and the occurrences are very dispersed. It lives there on swampy meadows and damp grassland, mainly in the hill country.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1877 by Stephan Clessin as Pupa (Vertigo) Heldi . Some authors subdivide the genus Vertigo into two sub-genera: Vertigo (Vertigo) OF Müller, 1773 and Vertigo (Vertilla) Moquin-Tandon, 1856. In this sub-genus, the slender diaper snail is placed in the genus Vertigo (Vertigo) .

Danger

In Germany, the species is threatened with extinction (hazard category 1).
