The Schleibrücke in Kappeln is a two-winged double bascule bridge that crosses the Schlei and thus connects the landscapes of fishing and swans . It was built from 2000 to 2002 and opened to traffic on December 2, 2002. The B 203 and a footpath and bike path lead over the bridge in four lanes.

opening

The bridge will be opened on request (hoisting of a blue and white N flag, verbal request via VHF channel 11 or telephone) 15 minutes before the hour. Possible opening times are from April 1st to October 31st from 5.45 a.m. to 9.45 p.m. and from November 1st to March 31st from 7.45 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. The bridge is open for up to 15 minutes, the backlog of cars clears up in up to 10 minutes.

The actual process of closing the bridge takes exactly two minutes. Only a minute later the barriers are opened again, the traffic lights are switched to green and the cars are allowed to pass the bridge again.

Opposite to the ship traffic, the bridge has three double signal lights arranged at right angles on the right-hand side of the passage - red / white, red / green, red / green. When the vehicle is moving freely, these show white-green-green, when the bridge is closed, they show white-red-red.

history

Ferries

A ferry connection between Kappeln and Ellenberg has been documented since 1671. The operator had to pay an annual lease to the Loitmark estate. In August 1850 a first bridge was built on the instructions of the Danish commander Giödesen.

Pontoon Bridge (1867 to 1927)

In 1867, a pontoon bridge was built on the initiative of Kappelner merchants . This was about 180 meters long and rested on 18 boats. At the deepest point of the loop, the bridge could be opened. On the bridge there were rails for the Eckernförde circular railways , but the locomotives were too heavy for the bridge, so that the cars had to be pulled over the bridge individually by horses. Bridge fees had to be paid to use the bridge. The bridge was repeatedly damaged by accidents and ice.

Swing Bridge (1927 to 2002)

The old superstructure of the Lindaunisser Bridge was originally intended to be used for the new bridge ; However, it was decided at short notice to build the bridge with two lanes because the traffic had increased. The bridge had a rotating part that could be opened. The bridge could carry two 50-ton locomotives with 18-ton cars. In 1933 it became free to use. The swing bridge was demolished in early January 2003 after the bascule bridge was completed . A piece of steel struts and a display case with photos on the corner of Rathausmarkt and Kirchstrasse are reminiscent of them. The former bridgehead on the Kappelner side was integrated into the harbor mile as a water staircase .

Bascule Bridge (since 2002)

Because the swing bridge was no longer sufficient for the growing traffic, a follow-up structure was planned. A tunnel could not prevail because of the high costs and a high bridge would have changed the cityscape significantly and meant longer distances to the city center. In 1986, the city council was unanimously in favor of a "two-winged double balance beam construction". However, in the opinion of the Federal Ministry of Transport, there was not enough experience with such a construction with high counterweights, so that a decision was made in favor of a two-wing double bascule bridge. The "first ramming" was on April 27, 2000. The new bascule bridge was inaugurated with a public bridge festival on December 1, 2002 and opened to traffic the following day.

construction

The 207 m long Schleibrücke Kappeln has two pairs of steel flaps that can be opened for the passage of ships. They are driven electro-hydraulically. There are two prestressed concrete superstructures between the western abutment and the flap pillar and the eastern abutment and the flap pillar. Because the subsoil is not stable enough due to a thick pack of digested sludge, complex caisson foundations had to be made for the valve pillars and the other pillars were founded with grout piles. The two abutments are founded flat. The bridge is controlled from the control room in the bridge keeper's house, which is located on the eastern flap pillar.

In order to enlarge the traffic areas and to enable the crossing of traffic in the city area at bridge openings, the bridge including the connecting road sections was designed with four lanes and traffic lights.

The harbor promenade in the city area runs in the bridge area in a cycle and footpath underpass.

Maintenance work

Since such an elaborate bascule bridge construction with the four bascule bridge halves and four lanes on the bridge repeatedly requires routine maintenance work over several years of operation, provisions have been made on both sides of the bridge with the possibility of fixed lane swiveling. In the case of maintenance work on the north bascule bridge, the two north lanes can be placed on a south lane by means of a permanent swiveling option, with the two south lanes being limited to one lane. In the event of work on the south bascule bridge, the pivoting is reversed. The pivoting starts and ends on the bridge in the western and eastern halves.
