The drag plate (also known as a tug ) is a protective device on the scabbard of edged weapons .

description

The drag plate is an edging made of about 2-4 mm thick sheet metal , usually made of iron , which is soldered on edge to the lower end of a metal sheath or a chape . The drag plate appeared at the end of the 18th century when edged weapons ( swords , sabers ) were attached to the hanger with ribbons and carried hanging low. It often happened that the scabbard dragged across the floor. This would severely damage the leather or later metal sheaths. The drag plate was used to protect the scabbard when it came into contact with the ground.
