The Schlern tunnel or Schlern tunnel ( Italian Galleria Sciliar ) is a railway tunnel of the Brennerbahn in South Tyrol / Italy. With a length of 13,316 meters, it is the longest tunnel on the Brenner Railway and the second longest railway tunnel completely located in Italy after the Apennine Base Tunnel (new lines not included).

Key data

The tunnel passes under the Schlerngebiet and connects the two places Waidbruck and Blumau in Eisacktal . The tunnel was built as part of the expansion of the Brenner Railway and has been in operation since 1994. The construction of this and three other tunnels made it possible to replace several curvy sections of the route between Verona and the Brenner Pass that were prone to falling rocks and made the route passable for piggyback trains and rolling country roads with a large clearance profile.

Furnishing

The tunnel's tube has two tracks, the tracks are slab track. There are two transfer points in the middle of the tunnel and near the south portal at Blumau. When it opened, the tunnel was one of the first sections of the Italian Brenner Railway to be equipped with the BACC / RS train protection system with driver's cab signaling, and the maximum permitted speed in the tunnel is 180 km / h. Driving through the tunnel at normal speed takes almost seven minutes; Through the tunnel, the travel time of regional trains between Bozen and Waidbruck was halved to around 15 minutes, as the stop in Atzwang was also closed. Most of the old route is used for the Eisack Valley Cycle Route .
