The lock Bolzum connects the federal waterways branch canal Hildesheim and Mittellandkanal east of Hanover in the Sehnder district Bolzum in the German state Lower Saxony . The lock overcomes the difference in altitude between the Mittelland Canal (here 65 m above sea level ) and the Hildesheim branch canal ( 73 m above sea level ). The Braunschweig Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for operation and maintenance .
Old lock
The sluice was built between 1926 and 1927 as an economy sluice with two open economy basins. The usable chamber length is 82.00 m, the chamber width 12.00 m and the jamb depth 3.00 m. The poor structural condition of the lock has meanwhile required extensive repair work, in particular for the hydraulic steel and mechanical engineering elements.
New lock
In the course of the expansion of the Hildesheim branch canal to waterway class Vb, a new lock with larger dimensions (usable length / width / discharge depth: 139 m / 12.50 m / 2.80 m) and without an economy basin was built from 2007 to 2012. After further expansion of the branch canal, the upper water of the lock will be raised by 0.5 m, so that the head will then be 8.50 m. The lock is connected to the Anderten remote control center. The old lock remains as a technical monument. The upper outer harbor, the lock chamber and the eastern savings basin will be partially filled and greened.
