The Rahe lock is a lock on the Ems-Jade Canal . It is located in Rahe , a district of Aurich in East Frisia . Due to the neighboring restaurant Kukelorum , the lock is also known as the Kukelorum lock .

history

The lock was opened in 1886 and completely renovated and expanded from 2005 to 2007. It overcomes a height difference of two meters and was the narrowest section of the canal until the renovation. Using larger ships was not possible. In a guide published in 1914 on the German shipping routes, the following information is given for the Raher lock:

  • Fairway depth : 1.50 - 2.00 meters
  • Usable length and width of the lock : 33 meters (length); 6.50 meters (width)

Due to the increasing economic importance and to make the canal even more attractive for tourism, the lock had to be completely renovated. Between September 2005 and July 2007 it was demolished during traffic at a cost of around 5 million euros and completely rebuilt. To make this possible in traffic, a new process was used in which nine large precast concrete parts, each weighing over 300 tons, were produced on site and then moved to the respective installation location. The old swing bridge was replaced by a new bascule bridge. For the new building, a measurement vessel with a length of 55 m and a width of 7.20 m was used.

Building description

The lock, which was expanded to 55 meters in length after the renovation, has two chambers with a total of three pairs of mitred gates. The installation of a third gate made it possible to adapt the lock process and thus the amount of water pumped to the different ship sizes. According to the operator of the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), this allows an “economic lock”. During the renovation, the previously existing swing bridge was converted into a bascule bridge ; However, the previously existing look was retained. The renovation cost around five million euros.

use

The lock is primarily used by excursion boats on the canal, but also by barges that transport building materials to the Aurich harbor.

environment

At the level of the lock, cycle paths cross the canal. At the lock there is a restaurant called Kukelorum . A connecting road between the Aurich districts of Rahe and Rahestermoor leads over the lock bridge. Since 1991 a memorial stone has been commemorating the life and work of Hannes Flesner , who was born not far from the lock.
