The Schönwalde lock is a lock in the Havel Canal in the state of Brandenburg in the Federal Republic of Germany. It connects the different water level heights of the Lower Havel Waterway and the Upper Havel Waterway in the Havel Canal, bypassing the Berlin urban area. It is located west of Schönwalde-Siedlung , in the south of the municipal Schönwalde-Glien .

The lock

The Schönwalde lock has a usable chamber length of 82.20 meters and a width of 12.00 meters. The maximum height of fall is 2.25 meters. The lock has massive lock heads and its chamber walls consist of simply anchored steel sheet piles. Heavy weight walls were placed on the chamber walls . The soles of the lock heads are at the same height, which means that the jumble waste takes place in front of the upper gate. This non-standardized design was chosen in order to be able to use identical door constructions in the upper and lower head. It is mainly due to the material shortage at the time. This made it possible to keep only one pair of gate leaves in reserve for possible emergencies. The miter gates have two openings in each gate wing that can be closed with segment gates. For tug shipping , which was still common at the time of construction, an electric capstan was built to facilitate operation on the north side of the lock heads to move the non-powered barges .

Shipping traffic at the lock

All locked vehicles are considered. In addition to cargo ships, this also includes push boats, passenger ships, pleasure craft and other vehicles.
