The Wendelstein lock is a listed lock on a lock channel of the Unstrut in Wendelstein . It is registered under registration number 094 30137 of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments of Saxony-Anhalt . Wendelstein is a district of the municipality of Kaiserpfalz in the Burgenlandkreis in southern Saxony-Anhalt, which is named after the medieval castle ruins of the same name from the 14th century, which have been partially renovated and inhabited . The castle was at times expanded into the Wendelstein fortress. The lock is located at kilometer 44.60 on the state waterway.
history
The use of the Unstrut as a transport route has been documented since 981. Shipping on the Unstrut is mentioned in 1602. For a long time, economic use worth mentioning was only possible to a very limited extent due to the shallow depth and the muddy banks. Great efforts had to be made to maintain the riverside paths, as these were indispensable for towing the barges. From 1790, shipping on the Saale was expanded further. The Elector of Saxony, Friedrich August III. ordered the upper Saale and the Unstrut to be made economically navigable. The Wendelstein lock was built between 1790 and 1794 as part of a major project to make navigable from the Saale to the Unstrut. It was completed in 1794 as one of the original 12 Unstrut locks. In 1834 the Unstrut was made passable throughout (quote) , and 12 locks are built on it, namely to Artern, Ritheburg, Schönewerda, Roßleben, Wendelstein, Nebra, Vitzenburg, Karsdorf, Burgscheidungen, Laucha, Zscheiplitz and Freiburg. All locks have drawbridges so that the roads are not interrupted.
description
The Wendelstein lock is a chamber lock with straight chamber walls. The lock has a usable length of 46.00 meters. It is 5.70 meters wide. The average height of fall is around 1.80 meters. To close the lock chamber, stem gates are used, which are opened and closed via gate poles and a mechanical drive. The lock was approved for ships up to a length of about 46 meters, which corresponds to the unstrut dimensions that are no longer in use today .
The Wendelstein barrage with lock and weir was completed between 1791 and 1794. Due to defects in the building fabric, the entire system was reconstructed between 1999 and 2002. The weir in the course of the river consists of a fixed weir with a crown width of 34.00 meters and a basic rifle weir with two flow openings, each 6.00 meters wide. The double shooters have a height of 3.40 meters. The reconstruction of the weir and the construction of a fish ladder in the form of the sole ramp took place from 1999 to 2001. Since the river is not a federal waterway here, the focus is on tourist use. Water sports enthusiasts with smaller boats and shallow drafts can still navigate the Unstrut.
Responsibility for the Unstrut from km 0.00 to 45.28 is exercised by the Sangerhausen river area in the State Office for Flood Protection and Water Management Saxony-Anhalt (LHW) Saxony-Anhalt, based in Oberröblingen .
