The Laucha lock is a listed lock on a lock channel of the Unstrut in Laucha an der Unstrut in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt . The lock is registered under registration number 094 83034 of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments of the State of Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The use of the Unstrut as a transport route has been documented since 981. Shipping on the Unstrut is mentioned in 1602. For a long time, economic use worth mentioning was only possible to a very limited extent due to the shallow depth and the muddy banks. Great efforts had to be made to maintain the towpaths . From 1790, shipping on the Saale was expanded further. The Elector of Saxony Friedrich August III. In this context, ordered that the upper Saale and the Unstrut be made economically navigable. The Laucha lock was built between 1790 and 1794 as part of a major project to make the Saale to the Unstrut navigable. It was completed in 1795 as one of the original 12 Unstrut locks. In 1834 the Unstrut was made passable throughout (quote) , and 12 locks are built on it, namely to Artern, Ritheburg, Schönewerda, Roßleben, Wendelstein, Nebra, Vitzenburg, Karsdorf, Burgscheidungen, Laucha, Zscheiplitz and Freiburg. All locks have drawbridges so that the roads are not interrupted.

In the mid-1950s, the Unstrut lost its economic importance as a waterway. The hydraulic structures were neglected. In 1967 the river was deleted from the list of inland waterways in the GDR and the Artern, Schönewerda, Roßleben, Nebra, Vitzenburg, Karsdorf and Freyburg locks were shut down as part of a flood protection program for the Unstrut.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the lock could not be used for a long time due to the poor building fabric; there was an urgent need for renovation. The first repair took place in 1989. The damage to the Laucha lock made special demands on the renovation of the natural stone masonry. The lock was reconstructed from May 1997 to May 1998.

description

Today's Laucha lock is a chamber lock with sloping chamber walls made of Nebra sandstone . The lock has a usable length of 50.10 meters. It is 5.60 meters wide. The weir next to the lock in the river consists of a fixed weir with a width of 53.10 meters and a base gate. It was renewed from May 1998 to September 1998. With the reconstruction of the weir and the sluice in Laucha, a new fish pass was built at the same time, which is supposed to enable the passage of the unstrut at this transverse structure for migrating fish species and invertebrate organisms. The new construction of the fish ladder in the form of a rough channel took place from April 1998 to September 1998.

Since the river is no longer a federal waterway here , tourist use is in the foreground. Smaller passenger ships and water sports enthusiasts with smaller boats and shallow drafts can still navigate the Unstrut.

Responsibility for the Unstrut from km 0.00 to 45.28 is exercised by the Sangerhausen river area in the State Office for Flood Protection and Water Management Saxony-Anhalt (LHW) Saxony-Anhalt, based in Oberröblingen .
