( Meigen , 1820)

The simple predator fly ( Machimus rusticus ) is a fly from the family of predator flies (Asilidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 15 to 25 millimeters. The anterior femora are only hairy and not bristled on the underside. All femora are black, the tibiae are red at the base. The leg bristles are black and yellow, the scutum has mostly yellow bristles. The second antennae ( postpedicellus ) is significantly longer than the first two antennae .

distribution and habitat

The distribution area is Palearctic and extends from England and Spain to the east to Kazakhstan . In Germany, the species is apparently absent in the north-west, the currently known north-west limit of distribution runs roughly in the extreme south of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania through south-east and south Lower Saxony and through northern North Rhine-Westphalia.

The species inhabits open, dry and warm biotopes in Central Europe, especially poor and dry grasslands with a closed vegetation cover.

Way of life

The information on the flight time varies in the literature and ranges from May to August at the most, but the period June to August is usually given. As with many predator flies, the range of prey is very broad; beetles , two-winged birds , hymenoptera , butterflies and dragonflies have been identified as prey .

Eggs are laid on flowers. The larval development comprises seven larval stages and takes one to two years. The larvae live in the soil and feed entomophagus from the second larval stage , apparently mainly on the larvae of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae).
