background

Rabbi Shlomo Chaim Ha-Cohain Aviner was born in Lyon in 1943 . Lyon was under German occupation at the time. He joined the Bnei Akiva movement. He emigrated to Israel in 1966 and was influenced by Zvi Yehuda Kook at Merkas HaRaw Kook . He took an active part in the 1967 and 1973 wars. For 20 years he has published a number of treatises in book form, gives interviews and advises those seeking advice by telephone and email.

Controversy

In 1995 he is said to have been Jigal Amir's last rabbinical interlocutor before the Prime Minister assassinated Rabin . Aviner is said to have told Amir that the “Din Rodef u-Moser” (which means a death sentence for “persecutors” and “traitors” of the Jewish people) should be applied to Rabin.

In 2005, he called on Israeli soldiers to refuse to obey orders if they were to be ordered to remove Israeli settlers from the Gaza Strip .

In 2009 a pamphlet was published aimed at the Israeli soldiers who were involved in the Gaza war . The Breaking the Silence group had pointed out the existence of this pamphlet . This called for people not to adhere to international law during the struggle. It was also mentioned that cruelty is sometimes a virtue.

In 2012 Rabbi Aviner published a religious treatise banning women from being elected to the Israeli parliament. They are only objects of pleasure there.

After the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in April 2019, Rabbi Aviner caused quite a stir when he had suggested in an interview that this fire could be a just “punishment from God” for the burning of the Talmud in Paris in 1242. The American Jewish Committee described this view as "repulsive and un-Jewish".
