Amberg Castle

The Amberg Castle is located in the district of Levis the city Feldkirch (Vorarlberg), just north of the station on a low hill. The property is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

A previous building was owned by the Feldkirch patrician family Haiden from the 13th to the 15th century. The mayor Felix Märklin built a castle above Altenstadt from 1502. Around 1510 the estate passed into sovereign property and served as the residence of Emperor Maximilian I's mistress , Countess Anna von Helfenstein . The natural son of the two, Friedrich Max von Amberg, inherited the property in 1535. After his death, King Ferdinand I enfeoffed his court vice chancellor Dr. Jakob Jonas with the residence, a year later the fiefdom was converted into free property. In 1561 the heirs sold to Heinrich Vogler and there were frequent changes of ownership over the next 200 years. The best-known owners were the mayor of Feldkirch, Othmar Pappus (1582), the lift master of the town, Georg von Altmannshausen (1591), the nobles of Furtenbach (1600) and Viktor von Travers zu Ortenstein (1697). Amberg has been in civil ownership since 1795. The poet Paula Ludwig was born here in 1900 . In 1928 a restoration and expansion took place, at times it served as a bed and breakfast. Today cultural events take place and it is rented out for private parties.

architecture

The residence is a four-storey, almost square residential tower with a half-hip roof . On the north side there was originally a narrow rectangular staircase, which was later expanded and extended to the north in 1970. The arched entrance portal lies between the residential tower and the wing. Loopholes on the mountain side have been preserved on the ground floor of the tower and extension. The basement of the tower has a barrel vault made of bricks. From the ground floor to the second floor are beamed ceilings. On the third floor, a simple field ceiling with applied strips from the 17th century has been preserved. The staircase is in the annex adjoining the residential tower. Most of the living rooms were newly furnished in 1929.
