Apolda Castle
The Apolda Castle is located in the city of Apolda district Weimarer Land in Thuringia .
location
Apolda Castle is located in the southern area of today's city center on the site of the former castle , which was also located on the north-facing mountain spur.
history
The castle served to secure the settlement on the right of the Ilm as well as the traffic on the road leading to Jena and Kospoda and towards Kölleda the Saale crossing at Neuengönna / Hummelstedt to the Saale bridge.
Apolda was already a regional center in Franconian times, where the Counts of the Gau Husitin held court. In 1119 a Count Wichmann is named, who was probably lord of the castle. The Vitzthume von Apolda have been documented since the 13th century . They were ministerials to the Archbishops of Kurmainz . At the end of the 14th century, the Wettin feudal lords took the place of the archbishop. In 1451 the castle was destroyed in the Saxon fratricidal war. It was largely eliminated and the castle that is still preserved today was built in its place. Remains of the castle can still be found in the walls.
Further structural changes were made in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Vitzthum renovation dates from that time and today provides space for the culture department of the Apolda city administration, the registry office, the Apolda branch of the Ottmar Gerster Weimar music school , the Apolda cultural association and the Apolda amateur theater fund.
On the upper floor of the 19th century south-west building, which was renovated in 1999, a hall is used for cabaret events and concerts.
