Augustenburg Castle

The August Castle is a former castle of the Marquis of Baden-Durlach in today Karlsruhe district Grötzingen . The formerly attached castle garden and the Augustenberg Chamber Estate now house the Augustenberg Agricultural Technology Center .

Originally built in the 10th century, the previous building of the castle served as a benefice house from the 12th century . Margrave Christoph I of Baden (ruled 1475–1515) acquired the building and expanded it into a princely residence. Charles II of Baden-Durlach (ruled 1553–1557) expanded it into a castle by adding two semicircular towers to the southeast and northeast corner and two wings with corridors to the west.

The castle owes its current name to Augusta Maria von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, from 1670 the wife of Friedrich Magnus von Baden-Durlach and mother of the founder of the Karlsruhe city, Karl Wilhelm . When Karlsburg in Durlach was destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession , it also served as a temporary residence. Augusta Maria, to whom Friedrich Magnus donated the castle in 1678, had it completely renovated from 1699 onwards. At the main entrance there is a plaque under the coats of arms, referring to the builder: “I was recently / How you can see me here / Immediately after the peace / Augusta so built / And because I'm standing there now / By her princess Hand / so I am named after her / Augustenburg / 1699 ” .

At the beginning of the 19th century the castle came into private ownership. In 1891 the painter Otto Fikentscher acquired the property and turned the castle into a cultural center for artists; Not least because of this initiative, Grötzingen acquired the reputation of a "painter's village" (see Grötzinger painter's colony ). During the Second World War, forced laborers were housed in the castle and after the end of the war it served as accommodation for 700 displaced persons. The community of heirs of Otto Fikentscher, who died in 1945, sold the castle in 1962 to the state of Baden-Württemberg, which, after fundamental renovation work and the construction of the north and south wing, rented it out as senior citizens' apartments with a bath and massage department, a doctor's practice and cultural facilities as well as a hotel wing with a restaurant wanted to. However, this failed because of the high renovation costs. The castle changed hands several times. Until the end of 2017, a nursing home for the elderly with approx. 115 care places was operated in Augustenburg Castle, which is to move back in after conversion with demolition and new construction of the modern wing.
