The banker Mendelssohn-Bartholdy used Börnicke Castle until his death in 1935, first in his first marriage with his wife Charlotte Reichenheim, then with his second wife Elsa Lucy Emmy Lolo von Lavergne-Peguilhen.

In 1945 members of the Swiss embassy moved from Berlin to the palace because they wanted to protect themselves from the bombing in Berlin . In April 1945 the Red Army set up a hospital in the castle . In connection with the land reform , the KPD took over the castle and estate. Wilhelm Pieck often spent his free time there. Then Börnicke Castle became the holiday home “1. May “, 1967 finally to the home for handicapped children. In 1992 the home or school was closed.

In 2003 the castle was sold to Schloss Börnicke gGmbH, Brigitte Schulenburg and Uwe Hamann. Together with the Berlin architect Rupert Stuhlemmer and the city of Bernau, she planned the reconstruction of the Börnicke palace complex. The focus of the construction planning was the construction of the Brandenburg Automobile Museum at Börnicke Castle. The partially dilapidated building was made accessible again and opened for events. The Friends of Castle and Gutshof Börnicke e. V. supports the reconstruction through numerous events, guided tours and funding projects.

Castle Park

The landscape park dates from the second half of the 19th century. It is characterized by a large pond in the northeastern part. The park was opened up with a network of numerous meandering paths, which always allowed new views of the pond. The castle was bordered by strictly geometric gardens. A large lawn was attached to the terrace on the southwest side. The architectural garden and the landscape park were understood here as one unit. The architectural part took over the function of the terraces and lawns as well as the special gardens such as flower and hedge gardens. The landscape park with boathouse and tennis court - which are no longer preserved today - played the role of play and sports area.

Manor and facility

The extensive farm buildings, manor house , stables , barns and schnapps distillery date from before 1909 - approximately from the years 1870/80. The manor house itself could possibly have been built in an even earlier time and has a classical plastered facade. The agriculturally used part is spatially slightly separated from the palace. It consists of two four-sided courtyards of different sizes - a small courtyard directly on the street and a very large courtyard behind. Both courtyards are paved with cobblestone. The stables consist of field stones and bricks in the typical local construction.

The Automobile Museum Schloss Börnicke occasionally held exhibitions in the former stables. The organizer was the Brandenburg Automobile Museum Schloss Börnicke eV association
