The Castle Baumgarten is a Grade II listed castle in the town of Mautern an der Donau in Krems-Land District in Lower Austria .
history
Around 1100 the noble free Gozwin donated the area of today's Baumgarten to the Benedictine monastery of Göttweig . In 1751 the reign of Baumgarten came to Franz Josef Giegl, who erected today's baroque building in 1756. In 1911 the manufacturer Carl Faltis bought the castle. He had the building re-baroque and refurbished. His daughter brought the castle into her marriage to the Minister of Education Max Hussarek von Heinlein . The writer Egon Caesar Conte Corti lived here.

The castle is situated at a commanding altitude above Mautern. It is a uniformly faced multi-wing complex that encloses two courtyards. It is late baroque, but it largely received its present appearance between 1911 and 1922. The access to the north is flanked by two monumental sphinxes. They were created by Franz Leopold Fahrmacher around 1700 and once stood in front of Thürnthal Castle . The front of the castle faces the Danube. The rococo facade is structured by pilasters. In the west, a basket arched portal decorated with a large coat of arms leads into the farm yard. The ballroom of the palace is adorned with a ceiling fresco by Martin Johann Schmidt from 1758, which depicts the triumph of Apollo with an allegory of the arts and sciences. In several rooms there are flat ceilings with stucco mirrors from the beginning of the 20th century.
At the same time, the neo-baroque garden was laid out on a large terrace in the east of the main building. It is adorned with numerous baroque sculptures, vases, benches and fountains that come from various castles (including the Schlosshof and Thürnthal) and were bought by Carl Faltis. There is also a pretty garden pavilion with a mansard roof. Behind the castle is a spacious cellar from the 18th century with a cross-shaped floor plan.
