Castle in Engelstein

Engelstein Castle is a hill castle in the west of Engelstein in the market town of Großschönau in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria . The castle is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

At first the castle belonged to the Kuenringers . Then the castle was a fiefdom of the Lords of Walsee . Probably on the site of a former watchtower at a street crossing, construction of the castle began after the destruction of Harmannstein Castle around 1300.

architecture

The castle is protected on three sides by ponds. The main castle with a keep stands above a bailey and a farm yard.
