Dornheim Castle , built by Melchior von Entzenberg around 1587, was located in the Dornheim community at the northeastern end of the village in the Ilm district in Thuringia until 1948 .

history

The manor with its castle was once the ancestral seat of a von Dornheim family that died out in the 14th century. Then there was a Georg Breithaupt, then Gottfried Beyer and around 1800 Friedrich Gotthardt Bertuch called himself the owner of the manor. Bertuch's daughter married Christian Gottfried Schierholz , so that he became the owner from 1806. In 1906 the von Witzleben family took over the castle and estate. Then it was Alfred Adalbert Hans Lutze von Witzleben-Wurmb.

To Castle

Regarding the two-storey so-called Yellow Castle , it can be said that it was surrounded by a moat and had numerous dormers . Access was once via a drawbridge and later via a stone bridge.

On October 26, 1813, the Austrian Emperor Franz II stayed in the castle. He met in Dornheim with the Russian Tsar Alexander and the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. ( Meeting of three monarchs ).

It is therefore surprising why the demolition of the historic castle after 1947 was admitted after it had been looted . Some things were still saved. The author experienced the demolition while working in Dornheim at the time.
