The lost Eisenfeld Castle (also called Haus an der Straße im Eisenfeld ) was located in the city of Wels in Upper Austria (Linzerstraße 85).

history

Eisenfeld was originally a noble seat of the Lord von Haunold, a benefactor of the city of Wels. In 1531 it became a fiefdom of the von Scherffenberg family , and in 1554 it went to Hans Jörger von Tollet . Around 1700 the property was acquired by Karl Ferdinand von Eyselsberg (1659–1731); this began here with the construction of a castle and a dairy . In 1731 this passed to Mark Katharina von Scherer and Hohenkrenzberg (1732 to 1751), followed by Thomas Edler von Glaß (1751 to 1754), then Sebastian Freiherr von Zillenberg and his sister Mathilde (1755 to 1765), Johann Paul Mahrhoser (1766 to 1771), Karl Werneth (1771 to 1773), Mathias Öhmayr (1773 to 1780), Ignaz Freiherr von Waldstätten (1780 to 1783), Heinrich Gottlieb von Uchtritz (1783 to 1798), Jgnaz Heilinger (1798 to 1802), Vincenz von Waß (1802 to 1808), Andreas Redlich, kk Obersoldkriegs-Kommissär (1854 2) and then the kk Oberleutnant Franz Thany. Between 1802 and 1808 the exterior of the castle was redesigned with an empire facade.

Recent history

In 1926 the city of Wels bought the castle and in 1929 a kindergarten opened here. After the end of the Second World War , war refugees were housed in the castle. After that, the castle stood empty for years and began to deteriorate. It was demolished in 1966.

Eisenfeld Chapel in Wels

A stucco ceiling with five frescoes, presumably a work of a comask , came from the former castle to the municipal museum in Wels. The restored former palace chapel was put up again on urban land and is still known today as the Eisenfeld chapel (Linzer Straße 68).
