MUSIK AM 13. is a concert series for church music in Stuttgart , the concerts of which - with the exception of the special concerts - take place on the 13th of each month. It was founded in 1990 by Thomas Schäfer , and since 1996 Jörg-Hannes Hahn has been responsible for it. The concert series became a podium for innovative church music, which received national attention. MUSIK AM 13th will be performed in the Evangelical City Church Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt , the only originally preserved late Gothic hall church in Stuttgart, and the Luther Church Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt.

program

In addition to rarely performed works of early music, there is a clear focus on the sacred music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Overall presentations are performed regularly, for example all of the organ works by JS Bach and O. Messiaen , and at MUSIK AM 13. all major organ works by Max Reger were performed cyclically. But also less extensive work cycles, e.g. For example, the organ works by JU Steigleder and W. Jacob , the choral music collections “Israelsbrünnlein” by JH Schein or the “Schwanengesang” and “ Sacred Choral Music ” by Heinrich Schütz were played here.

Composer portraits

Cantus Stuttgart

Since 2003 one of the concerts has been dedicated to a contemporary composer every year. Adriana Hölszky , Dieter Schnebel , Hans Zender , Klaus Huber , Wolfgang Rihm , Helmut Lachenmann , Heinz Holliger , Younghi Pagh-Paan , Krzysztof Penderecki , Sofia Gubaidulina and Martin Smolka have been guests so far . In the "Composer Portraits" a representative cross section of the compositional work is presented, partly also as a world premiere. In an interview, the composer and his interlocutors Ewald Liska and Jörg-Hannes Hahn shed light on the main areas of his work.

Organ cycle

After the fundamental organ renovation, Hahn launched the Stuttgart organ cycle “Summer! - 8 × organ ”, which takes place during the summer holidays. In this, the musical host invites organists from home and abroad to a recital in the city church of Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt. A cycle of works is on the program every year, most recently the organ sonatas by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , the choral fantasies and the great independent organ works by Max Reger as well as the organ symphonies by Louis Vierne . In 2013, arrangements by Richard Wagner for organ were performed.

Ensembles of the concert series

In addition to invited soloists and ensembles, the Stuttgart Bach Choir and the Stuttgart Bach Orchestra perform at MUSIK AM 13 . Together with the Cantus Stuttgart Chamber Choir, these are considered to be important musical pillars in the state capital of Stuttgart.

Free admission

As a special feature of Stuttgart's musical life, entry to the MUSIK AM 13. series has been free since it was founded, with the exception of special concerts. With this, the organizers deliberately set the threshold for contact with classical music low and give everyone interested access to top-class church music. The high quality with free entry is only possible because church and municipal institutions, numerous companies and institutions, development associations and many private donors actively support the musical work.
