The castle Faulin ( French Château de Faulin ) is a castle in the commune of Lichères-sur-Yonne in the Yonne department of the French region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté . The castle is located at the foot of a wooded hill in the valley of the River Yonne on the banks of the Canal du Nivernais .

history

The complex was first mentioned in the 13th century as the castle of the Lords of Châtel-Censoir . In 1389 it was acquired by a branch of the noble de Bourgoing family, who built what is now the castle in the late 15th century. As Bourgoing de Faulin , members of the family held important offices at the court of the Dukes of Nevers . The castle remained in the family's possession until the 18th century. In the early 19th century, the castle and lands came into the possession of the de Vogüé family . The agricultural buildings on the grounds of the palace complex date from this time. The facility is still privately owned today.

Buildings

The castle consists of the manor house in a rectangular courtyard, which is flanked by three round towers, the donjon and another tower with a square floor plan. The gate tower was built in 1577. Outside the castle walls, in front of the castle gate, there is a pigeon tower on a round floor plan.

The castle has been listed as a historic monument ( Monument historique ) by the Ministry of Culture since 1993 .

museum

The castle grounds are home to the Museum of Technical Innovations of the Middle Ages ( Musée de l'innovation technique médiévale ). The museum shows objects on topics of technology in the Middle Ages such as agriculture, textile production, mill technology, paper production, printing technology, architecture, astronomy and clock technology.

Film set

In the 1960s, Schloss Faulin was the location and backdrop for the comedy Drei Bruchpiloten in Paris (in Germany also under the title Die Große Sause , original title: La Grande vadrouille ), one of the greatest successes in French cinema.
