The Göksholm Castle lies on the southern edge of the Swedish lake Hjälmaren in the municipality of Örebro . It has been privately owned since its inception and is mainly known for the fact that the leader of the Engelbrekt Uprising was slain here in 1436 by a son of the then owner.

The oldest parts of the castle can be dated to the 13th century . At that time, the building looked more like a castle with a larger tower, which was rebuilt in six stages in the Middle Ages. After a major fire at the end of the 16th century, the castle was modernized in the Dutch Renaissance style and received, among other things, larger windows. Despite this extensive renovation, the medieval building structure was still recognizable. A very well-preserved ceiling painting with 121 cassettes also dates from this period .

The castle, as it was depicted in the font Suecia antiqua et hodierna around 1700 .

In the 17th century a curtain wall was built around the castle, which was provided with portals. In addition, wing structures were added that no longer exist today. In 1801 the roof of the castle was changed and after that there were no major changes to the building fabric. A careful restoration of the castle took place around 1950 , whereby older details of the walls were exposed.

In 1676 a frieze was created that has now disappeared and listed the owners of the castle from 1320 to 1676 (" as it could be proven by letter "). There is a copy of this list that was made in 1801, but it is incorrect. The list, corrected according to historical sources, shows that the castle was initially inherited from mother to daughter. From around 1450 to 1676 the castle always changed from father to son. After that there was no longer any uniform rule. Since 1999 the castle has been owned by Baron Erik Leijonhufvud, whose family inherited it in the 19th century. Since 1967 it is classified as Byggnadsminne .
