The Gösting Castle is a Baroque palace in Graz in Styria . It is located at the foot of the Burgberg on the Thaler Bach in the 13th district of Gösting in Graz . The building can be reached via bus line 40, which has its terminus in front of the castle.

history

After a lightning strike in the powder store and a subsequent fire that destroyed Gösting Castle in 1723 , its owner at the time, Count Ignaz Maria von Attems, decided not to rebuild it. The architect Johann Georg Stengg was then commissioned to build a summer palace in the valley, which was supposed to be right next to the Thaler Bach. However, some lancet vaults on the ground floor of the castle point to an older structure on which the new castle was built from 1724 to 1728; they are probably the remains of an office building from the 17th century.

After the completion of the building in 1728, the interior was not finished until 1735. In 1844/45 the French gardens were redesigned into an English park . In 1891 Karl Lacher provided the plans for a partial redesign of the interior. The Attems family owned Gösting Castle until 1955 , before it was sold to Hans and Grete Totz, who took care of the structural repair of the war damage . The interior suffered due to the leasing of numerous rooms as living quarters for guest workers. In 1960 the exterior was renovated and in 1967 the roof was renewed. Gösting Castle is still privately owned.

Architecture and design

The long main front of the castle is accentuated by a central projection, which is flanked at right angles by side wings. The subsequent pillar arcades lead to two square corner pavilions. The street-facing side of the castle is decorated on the first floor with foliage and ribbon work , has decorative window crowns and gable with vase decoration. In addition to the stucco decoration, a monogram of the client is attached to the central projection. The shoulder arch stone portal is decorated with vases and has wrought iron window grilles.

The facade facing the courtyard is simpler, but has rocaille stone vases and angel putti made of sandstone with cartouches of the coat of arms of Counts Attems and Leslie (around 1765/70).
