history

In 1506 Ludwig I von Boyneburg , who already had the Krayenburg as a fief , also acquired Gehaus Castle. His sons shared the property. In 1715/16 Georg Philipp zu Boineburg and Lengsfeld had the baroque, so-called Upper Castle built in its half. The coat of arms stone above the entrance portal reminds of this. Several renovation phases and stylistic modernizations followed, the elegant staircase in the center of the building was installed in 1864. However, the respective owners mostly preferred the castles in the neighboring towns of Stadtlengsfeld and Weilar, which remained in the family until 1945.

The so-called Lower Castle in Gehaus was destroyed in the Seven Years War and later rebuilt as an economic courtyard with residential buildings. The Barons von Boineburg leased and sold it in the 19th century.

At the same time as the Upper Castle, a park with valuable, rare trees was laid out. In the southwest there is a chapel with the hereditary burial of Boineburg and Lengsfeld.

After the end of the war - Gehaus was taken on April 11, 1945 - the castle was used by the American occupation troops and then by the Red Army as a regional command post. This was followed by the temporary billeting of 40 refugee families and resettlers, a total of around 250 people, in the village. In September, the expropriated property of the Boineburgers was divided up as land reform land to the farm workers and resettlers. The palace park was rededicated to the people's park, an open-air stage and a music pavilion were built by the residents for cultural events until 1964.

In 1966, the castle roof and the exterior plaster were renewed with government subsidies (80,000 GDR marks). In 1977, damaged windows were repaired and the stairwell renovated. In order to provide better learning conditions for the local school children, the school sports hall was set up in a wing of the farm building. School meals and kindergarten were also moved to the castle.

Today the castle also houses administrative areas of the municipality.
