The Grabow Castle , also known as Castle Grabow or mansion Grabow called, is a Grade II listed castle at the address Schulstraße 5 in the southern part of the town Möckern belonging village Grabow in Saxony-Anhalt . The castle is listed as a historical monument as well as a ground monument.

Architecture and history

The facility emerged from a moated castle , which was first mentioned around 940. In 948 Otto I gave the castle to the Magdeburg Mauritius Monastery. In 1334 the castle passed to the von Wulffen family .

The castle was laid out as a round castle . It stands on an artificially raised elevation and was surrounded by a wide moat . This moat is still preserved today. To the east, towards Schulstrasse, the moat is spanned by a single-span stone arch bridge over which the castle access that climbs towards the castle leads. Part of the curtain wall in the northern area has been preserved from the early days of the complex . It was built in the 12th century with a height of about six meters and crowned with battlements . Presumably in the first half of the 13th century, it was increased to about eleven meters, with the original battlements remaining partially recognizable. Remains are still on a landscaped square floor plan as a fragment keep to recognize that protected the original located in the northern part of the curtain wall entrance to the castle. Access to the interior of the castle was through a kennel from the east or north.

Today's entrance portal is located on the southeast side of the courtyard between the curtain wall bordering to the north and the residential building to the south. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century and is designed as a basket arch and is crowned by a vertical gable.

The south side of the courtyard is taken up by the two-story manor house. The building was erected in the Baroque period in 1713 for Hans-Christoph von Wulffen, probably including older parts. A heraldic plaque above the entrance dates from the previous building from 1621. The large two-storey building has twelve axes and is simply structured by pilasters . The building, which is covered by a mansard hipped roof , was rebuilt around 1900. During this time, a winter garden was also built, which created a connection to the large estate park, although the visual relationship was impaired by new buildings in the second half of the 20th century.

The manor park was laid out in 1901 by the then owner Olof von Lindequist. Bridges were built as well as tombstones and memorial stones for members of the von Lindequist and von Rohr families. The garden in the immediate vicinity of the manor house was created as a terrace garden. The old moats were partly widened to ponds and planted with trees in the form of backdrops.

In the period after the Second World War , the castle was expropriated and used as a school and municipal administration.

In 1997 the castle was acquired by the von Eichborn family and is used for residential purposes.

In the register of monuments of the city of Möckern , the castle is registered as an architectural monument under registration number 094 05692 .
