Castle high-rise in Vorchdorf

Castle skyscraper located in the municipality Vorchdorf in the district of Gmunden in Upper Austria (Schlossplatz 1).

history

The seat in Vorchdorf was built between 1454 and 1462 by Chunrat dem Vischpekch, caretaker on Eggenberg . The Vischpekch were originally based in Fischbach . In 1532 Johann Fernberger zu Eggenberg was enfeoffed with Vorchdorf by King Ferdinand I , who had bought it from Leopold the Vischpekch (probably before 1530). The Fernberger were the owners of Vorchdorf until 1618; that year Vorchdorf was sold to Gregor Händl, the estate owner. From these the property came to Khemeter von Tribein , in 1654 it was sold to the governor Count Hanns Ludwig von Kuefstein. His son, Count Preißgott, sold the castle to Schlierbach Abbey in 1660 . In 1871 it was bought by the Vorchdorf community.

Vorchdorf Castle after an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer

Vorchdorf Castle today

As you can see on the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674, Vorchdorf Castle was a three-story building covered by a moat roof. Even then, a parapet-like arched frieze ran under the gable of the castle. The castle was surrounded by a wall with a corner tower and an onion roof; The Meierhof was also involved in this .

Compared to the past, the roofing has changed in particular, in that the gable wall was raised with the round arch frieze (machicolation wreath) and provided with a crossing roof. Apart from that, the castle building is essentially still the original Vishpekchen construction. The entrance portal dates from the Rococo period in the middle of the 18th century. The Meierhof and the surrounding wall have disappeared today, however, they were demolished in 1911 together with the servants' wing on the ground floor. The local history museum is housed in the still existing wall tower ("Fischerturm").

The Neptune Fountain in front of the castle comes from Schlierbach Abbey. In 1962 the building was completely renovated. An inn has been operated in it for 100 years. The first tenants were Franz and Theresia Hörach (1891), Josef and Anna Hörtenhuber (1901–1910), Franz and Anna Eder, Karl Dickinger (1927), Franz and Maria Ziegelböck (1960); current innkeepers are Rudolf and Pauline Hillinger.
