Holtfeld Castle is a Renaissance moated castle from the 16th and 17th centuries in Borgholzhausen in the Gütersloh district , North Rhine-Westphalia . It is privately owned and is not open to the public.

history

The Holtfeld Castle was first mentioned in 1380 in an Osnabrück feudal register; the Lords of Todrank , who were resident at Ravensberg Castle , were considered the owners. In 1497 this family died out, and through the last heir, the castle fell to the imperial barons of Wendt , who lived in the castle until 1863.

During this time from 1599 to 1602 the mansion was built in Renaissance style. The inner gate building was built in 1632, the outer one in 1705. At the beginning of the 18th century, the facility was redesigned.

In 1863 the Counts of Marchant d'Ansembourg inherited the castle and 600 acres of land. The counts gave the castle to a sideline, who sold it to the counts of Galen . However, they did not have the means to repair the castle and leased the castle. In 1936 the Counts of Korff-Schmising zu Tatenhausen bought the building.

In the 1930s, the building was in serious disrepair and could not be inhabited. After the renovation in 1936, the agricultural school moved here. In 1945 the writer Hans Roselieb took his own life here. After being used as a lung sanatorium, the castle was operated as a hotel until 1977. Then apartments were created in the outbuildings, the castle now serves as an office, exhibition and apartment.
