Matzdorf Castle

Matzdorf Castle is located in Maciejewo in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland . The castle is now used as a hotel and is one of the finest examples of the Pomeranian Tudor style . With its octagonal tower, bay windows and battlements , the castle is reminiscent of a medieval castle .

history

In the Middle Ages, Matzdorf belonged to the von Viesen and Peterdorf families. In 1477 Duke Bogislaw X enfeoffed Carsten von Flemming with the village. Matzdorf became the headquarters of a local branch of the von Flemming family , which belonged to the Pomeranian nobility.

The von Viesen had a castle built in the village, which was probably located in the western part of the village on Lake Pogrim ( Jezioro Lechickie ). Archaeologically it can be established that this castle was a multi-storey residential tower surrounded by earth walls. According to a legend, the castle was inhabited by a count, who cruelly punished the villagers for the smallest offenses in a torture chamber.

The medieval castle was probably demolished in the 17th century in favor of a contemporary manor house . Medieval fortifications were preserved until the 18th century. A terrace-shaped pleasure garden was laid out on the lake side. The mansion was demolished in 1868.

From 1896 Paul Hasso Tam was the owner of Flemming. Together with Burow, he converted Gut Matzdorf into a Fideikommiss and had today's castle built from 1899 to 1900.

Inside, the dining room is particularly noteworthy, which resembled that of Dresow Castle , from which the lady of the castle at the time came. Some rooms still have original paneling and stucco ceilings . The stoves in the tower room and in the garden lounge are also artistically valuable.
