Mistelbach Castle is located in the Mistelbach district of the Buchkirchen bei Wels community in Upper Austria.

History of the castle

In the Middle Ages, there was a moated castle in place of today's castle. This is first mentioned in 1343 as a property of the Strachner family. At that time a Jakob Strachner stated that he had received the fortress from the Schaunbergers as a fief.

After the Schaunberger family died out, the Starhembergers inherited the fiefdom of Mistelbach. After the Strachners followed the followers, for a short time a Weikert von Polheim was also a Schauburg fiefdom. In 1454 Siegmund Kirchberger, who had accompanied Count Bernhard Schaunburg on the journey to the Holy Land, received the castle to Leiblehen. In 1591 Baron Karl von Gera was the owner. In 1599 Mistelbach came into the possession of Wolfgang von Polheim, his heirs sold the property to Gregor Hack von Pornimb . This family made the conversion to a moated castle. In 1697 Alexander Hack sold the castle to Hans Konstantin von Kauthen. After the death of Count Thaddäus Adam von Kauthen, Baron Wenzel von Rummerskirch inherited the rule in 1768. He sold the property in 1772 to the Count Firmian , who remained the owners until 1887. The Upper Austrian Volkskreditbank then acquired the castle from Countess Anna von Firmian.

present

The renovation carried out by the last owners served to create suitable premises for the domestic school for girls housed in it. The castle is now a three-storey building in the classical style and an attached one-storey wing, so that the main building with the side wing forms a courtyard open to the side. During the renovation in 1946, the castle lost its already dilapidated tower. There is a small park on the east side. Today the castle is the seat of the ÖKO Wirtschaft & Design college . The castle is owned by the State of Upper Austria .
