The Niederroßla castle stood in Niederroßla , today part of the rural community Ilm Valley wine route in the district Weimarer Land in Thuringia .

history

During the renovation of the Niederroßla moated castle around 1738, Duke Ernst August from Weimar had the baroque castle built as a hunting lodge with the main gate in the area of ​​the outer bailey. It had a trapezoidal floor plan, two corner towers and was open to the park. Further buildings followed. An agricultural property was also created that was leased. The last tenant was Richard Hauptner from 1925 to 1946.

Between 1779 and 1789, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stayed in the castle several times. He is also said to have planted chestnut trees in the park.

In 1945/46 the mayor's office was set up in the castle that was damaged by a bomb during the Second World War . In addition, resettlers from the German eastern regions were housed. In 1947, the Soviet occupying forces had the manor and servants' quarters demolished on the basis of Order No. 209 . The building rubble was used to fill the moat around the former castle.
