history

Nieder- and Oberroßla used to be a district. The division did not take place until the 12th century. Probably during this time the moated castle was built in Niederroßla . A noble free Dietmar von Roßla was first mentioned in a document in 1119. He is certainly also the builder of the moated castle.

After this family died out in 1371, the castle became the property of von Vitzthum . The Vitzthums lost the castle during the Saxon Fratricidal War in 1447 because they were responsible for feuds . Subsequently, Duke Wilhelm III. von Sachsen the castle and built an accounting and justice office ( Amt Roßla ) in it. Since he died childless in 1482, the property went to his nephews Ernst and Albrecht . This completed the Leipzig division in 1485 , whereby Niederroßla Castle came to the Ernestines . She stayed with them even after the Wittenberg surrender in 1547. When the Ernestine Duchy of Saxony was partitioned , Niederroßla Castle came to the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar in 1572 and to the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg in 1603 . After the Saxony-Altenburg line died out in 1672, the castle came back to Saxony-Weimar when the state was now divided.

Niederroßla moated castle

From 1738 to 1739 the Weimar Duke Ernst August I had the baroque Niederroßla Castle built on the floor of the outer bailey . This was demolished in 1947.

After the Second World War, the castle complex was left to decay. In 1956 the castle was placed under monument protection, in 1966 the council of the community together with the institute for monument preservation initiated steps to secure and renovate the building fabric within the scope of the possibilities at the time. Apartments and a gymnasium were built in the west wing . A school kitchen was housed in the knight's hall. In 1976 the tower was covered again.

From 1991 the redesign of the outdoor area and measures to preserve the remains of the half-timbered buildings took place. In 1995 it was possible to secure the east wing. On April 1, 2008, the gable end of the east wing collapsed for an unknown cause. The foundation stone for the reconstruction was laid on April 23, 2009 by the mayor. For this purpose, 96,000 euros in donations and 200,000 euros in funding were made available. A plastic tube with coins, a leaflet about the moated castle, the appeal for donations, a current newspaper and a commemorative publication were embedded in the masonry.

The moated castle, a simple three-storey building group with its core castle on a pentagonal ground plan, was protected on its north and west side by the Ilm and on the other two sides by artificial moats . The trench was 25 m wide and 5 m deep.

Above the old outer bailey in the south of today's castle complex are the castle complex and two round corner towers on a trapezoidal floor plan .
