Oberoderwitz Castle, until 2011 a youth hostel

The manor in Oberoderwitz was first mentioned in 1632, at that time it was still owned by the von Nostitz family . Later it passed to the Ruppersdorf family Meyer, who finally sold it in 1908 to the Zittau governor Freiherr von Beschwitz. He had the castle built in 1910 and after completion moved his residence here in 1911.

After the end of the war, the land reform in 1945 was followed by the expropriation of Freiherr von Beschwitz, the approximately 162 hectare area of the manor was confiscated and redistributed, the landowners were only left with a forest of 0.92 hectares with their family grave. The outbuildings of the castle were expanded to create additional living spaces and stables for new farmers .

The main building became the property of the municipality, which has been using it since 1949 as the youth hostel “Thomas Mann”, later “Schloss Oderwitz”, for over 60 people. In the 1990s, additional bungalows were built on the site to provide additional beds for more than 70 seasonal guests. In 2006 the German Youth Hostel Association withdrew as operator, the hostel was continued by the community. Since this meant an additional burden of around 30,000 euros on the municipal treasury, it was decided to sell the property in 2010 as part of a budget consolidation. A buyer was found at the end of 2011.
