history

The estate was first mentioned in a document as the Salzburg Zehenthof in 1244. Towards the end of the 16th century, the farm was expanded by the Counts of Saurau . Between 1794 and 1801 the castle was owned by Ludwig Graf Galler, who set up a brewery in it. In 1855, Friederike von Washington bought the property from her wedding equipment. Her husband Maximilian Emanuel von Washington then devoted himself to expanding Pöls Castle into a model agricultural estate. As a native Duchess of Oldenburg, Friederike von Washington was a sister of Queen Amalie of Greece (she was married to King Otto I of the Wittelsbach family) and first cousin of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria. The property thus came into the hands of the Barons of Washington, distant relatives of the first US president. In 1924 George von Washington , the son of Friederike and Maximilian Emanuel von Washington, signed all of his property over to his second wife, Maria v. W., used Crucified. In 1928, they sold the castle and the property belonging to it to the Mahla trade. After this, Pöls Castle, after a large part of the property was sold to the Austrian Armed Forces, went to the Allesch family, who have since called Pöls Castle together with the estate as their own. The castle was renovated in 1929.
