Maximilian Emanuel Willibald Bernhard Johann Gebhard Freiherr von Washington (born August 2, 1829 in Notzing , Upper Bavaria, † July 3, 1903 in Graz ) was a Bavarian - Austrian farmer and politician. He was a relative of the first US President, George Washington . The family crypt is located in the Protestant part of the St. Peter city cemetery in Graz.

He was the son of General Jakob von Washington and his first wife, Baroness Antonie Lochner von Hüttenbach , née Freiin von Verger . His godfather was King Maximilian I of Bavaria . He grew up in Bavaria and later moved to Austria. There he entered the service of the crown and served in the imperial army.

On August 15, 1855, he entered into a morganatic marriage with Friederike von Holstein-Gottorp, Duchess of Oldenburg (born June 8, 1820 in Oldenburg; † March 20, 1891 in Pöls), daughter of Grand Duke Friedrich August I of Oldenburg and sister of Queen Amalie of Greece . They named their son George of Washington (* July 31, 1856 - December 22, 1929) after the US President, the second son was named Stephan Ludwig Freiherr von Washington (* June 17, 1858 at Pöls Castle ; † September 10 1899 in Palermo ).

The Pöls Castle , where Maximilian von Washington lived with his family, was financed from his wife's fortune. The expansion of Pöls Castle into an agricultural model estate brought Maximilian von Washington a number of professional awards, including medals at the World Exhibition in Paris . A special honor for Maximilian von Washington was the fact that Emperor Franz Josef I rode a stallion from the Pöls stud on the coronation hill on the occasion of his coronation as King of Hungary (after the settlement between Austria and Hungary) (see corresponding paintings and photographs ). In his adopted home Styria, Maximilian von Washington became Vice President and in 1877 President of the Agricultural Society and gave a tour to Emperor Franz Joseph I on the occasion of his visit in July 1883 at the Brothers Kleinoscheg champagne winery .

For his services Maximilian was awarded the title of baron by Washington and he received awards such as the Order of the Iron Crown 2nd Class (1866), the Oldenburg House and Merit Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig , he was a member of the Order of St. John .
