Rosenholm Castle ( Danish Rosenholm Slot ) has been known as a location since the 14th century. It was owned by the church until the Reformation in 1536 and was then placed under the control of the crown, which in 1559 exchanged it for other possessions of the Rosenkrantz family. The castle is located north of Hornslet in Jutland on the Djursland peninsula .

In its current form, it was built between 1559 and 1567 and, along with Spøttrup Castle, is one of the oldest structures in Denmark . The builder was Jørgen "George" Ottesen Rosenkrantz (1523–1596) grandson of Anne Meinstrup , father of Holger Rosenkrantz and member of one of the oldest noble Rosenkrantz families in the country, whose name William Shakespeare used in the play Hamlet . In 1607 the four-winged castle , one of the very few that was influenced by the Italian Renaissance , was complete. In the 1740s, the five-hectare garden was laid out with symmetrical avenues and hedges. Inside, the palace was redesigned in the baroque style . Rosenholm is furnished with hundreds of furniture, paintings and tapestries and can be visited in summer. The garden pavilion , the so-called Pirkentavl, dates from 1560.
